my kids are around my hip or my chest OK so when a garage door is opening up they want to walk underneath it when it's past their eye level if the doors not if the door still moving do not go underneath the moving door just don't the risk that you're taking there if something weird happens in the door collapses or falls it can it can end a life and I'm not here to put fear in anybody it's just respect it OK it is something that is dangerous let that door finish moving before you go underneath it please we take it for granted yes we really don't know a lot about it we're like well that button on the wall over there when you press the button it'll go up and then when you press it it'll go down and actually if you want to stop it as it's going up you can press the button it will stop OK no harm on that OK also in the car you either have a remote that came with your garage door opener or you programmed it into the system of the car and it's like a light switch when you flip it on you expect the lights to go on it's the same thing we don't really know any better but Cody is right it's very dangerous if something goes awry with the door you don't want a door that weighs hundreds of pounds careening down on you Cody said it could kill you could also paralyze you if it hits your head it's going to I mean it could crush your spinal cord and this and you know it's not even me saying this has happened just look up garage door injuries so now the other half of the grocery industry injuries sorry is from mechanical or high mechanical people that are messing with the cables the springs the bottom brackets and drums that's how you lose fingers and that's how you get stitches in your head so I just need to understand that that stuff's under tension and be careful I would your door dented or cracked is 3:42 the paint peeling off is it bubbling out 3:44 is the door rusted corrosion on there so 3:48 we're going to go over that we you know 3:50 what we need to think about we I.E if 3:54 I'm the homeowner what we need to think 3:55 about is this is basically on most homes 3:58 in Houston okay some homes are Mansions 4:01 maybe not but most garage doors are 35 4:04 to 40 so forth how about that seal the border of the door that's important isn't it that's an important one that's a very important role the seal on the bottom a lot of times what we're going to be looking for did it shrink from side to side do you have a 6 inch gap on either side from the the rodents and pests to be crawling underneath easily inside your garage and we're going to look to see if it's shrunk and got more cards should be applicable a lot of times with age it actually gets rock hard and it starts cracking and breaking so it's like porosus that's what all people like me were you laughing we do are comparing this to going into the doctor right they're looking and so listeners are are arranged plus and they're kind of like not all heads yeah yeah this guy's right things get old such as that single throttle it can become brittle will become brittle is known as effective because it's supposed to be pliable to your point is supposed to expand we contract of this was designed for us like a weather seal way so it's supposed to do that and also does become available it will literally snapped right cruel fell apart it it will absolutely I almost think of it also in terms of of almost done a cushion for the door when it's closing from the opener so it is a little bit of a cushion it keeps some wear and tear both off of the opener the top section because that's where the pressure is also on the bottom panel so as long as the weather strip is in good condition then then you still you're getting the benefit from it if it's shrunk if you put glue traps in the corners of your garage you probably ought to have us take a look at your weather strip we can also do what's called exterior vinyl trim that has a flap on it that seals against the door so that's very common for us to do generally after the customer paid a fortune the pest control for them to tell you oh after they did their service know all this stuff's coming in through the garage open the biggest opening the biggest moving appliance that you have in your time in house so but yes so that's what that's what we found and we can help you we can probably get you 99% there I can't help if the concretes waving and and you know it's not leveled by two inches which we also see in the city sometimes so we can get you most of the way there and for most of our customers all the way where they need to be so sure Cody it's not just the reason rats it couldn't be the snakes yes right a lot of things and italics from keeping big snakes out and those are those are really worried about that and I have come across things of course I live out LaGrange and everyone's like OK you know come across comprehend last night the last names are big but there weren't lines careful and tell you one thing most row traps are great for those snake crawls upon it it will just take you with them right the big ones will make it right with them one truck go I don't know where it went so you know another term of it it's kind of like locking the door OK you wanna keep the robbers out it's something really want saying they're gonna get in sorry to tell you that but you're trying to deter them so if you got good vinyl trim on the outside of good weather strip seal on the bottom it's going to deter that road intersection we'll just say I'm gonna find the next house next door and go get in they're just going to look for another point of entering from somewhere else something else easy for we're trying to not keep it easy for them so I'm speaking with you replacing weather strip that simple bottom is one of they're just little plastic Shim groaning down the track and then if it's a metal roller it sounds The train going down down the tracks tick tick tick tick tick so how much is the builder really saving I mean come on pennies it's it's $100 maybe on a door it's really the installing company that's bidding it out because if the installing companies $5 higher than the next guy they didn't lose one job they lost thousands of jobs so it is a builder problem the way the bidding process is because they're always looking for cheapest price but they're not saying I want cheaper rollers the install the installing company that's selling it to the builders is the ones that's finding out how do I cut costs so I can get this thousand home project so but it comes back to the builder because within year one there's warranties generally on things like that in the builder has to then make good on it yes and and even a poor door sometimes will last longer than a year usually right past the builder warranty what a coincidence like everything else they put in nowadays tends to last about 18 months to three years and then it starts crumbling so and if it's crumbling or making weird noises if it gets stuck guess what else they they cheaped out on they cheaped out on the gauge of the metal the door can start buckling now you're looking potentially at a whole new door when it could have Thank you so much for tuning in hey if you have a garage door which is many of you most of us do have a garage and a garage door you gotta stand by here for this segment of the check a pro radio show - I've asked my good friend Cody Johnson from garage door doctor to join me here in the check a pro radio studios to talk about the garage door Cody how are you I'm doing great thank you for having me here it is so great to have you here your family has been in this business well pretty much all your life yeah other than four it's right since 1987 yes yeah that was born in 81 yeah so everyone in your family is involved in this you guys do a fantastic job here in the Houston area love the name of your company's garage door doctor I don't know if I've asked you this question before where did the name come from do you know I don't I don't I don't know my dad used to be a mechanic and he used to rebuild steering wheel columns and then he and then he on the side he was starting to garage door business as just an installer for builders and stuff and then he said I think I should fix these instead of install them and he just came up with garage door doctor so I'm not sure how he exactly got that though it's a fantastic name and when people see it and they hear it they're like what makes sense obviously they're a doctor for the garage door and we all at some point Cody please agree with me on this we'll need a garage door doctor right so you know people need that garage door guy to come out there not just one is broken hopefully beforehand with doing a lube and tune some maintenance ahead of time so you don't have to go out there when the spring breaks or something else major so generally people go to the doctor ahead of time to see what might be coming down the line they check your blood pressure they might take some blood and do some labs on them to see how things look you're a young guy when you get older they take a lot of blood trust me and they're all I mean they treat you like you're a 30 year old garage door they're like OK this guy's old let's take all the blood we can run every test but you guys do the same thing doctors do too you look at it with your inspections and so forth to see if something may be failing soon and then you'll make recommendations and then hopefully fix it before you leave Oh yeah absolutely that's we have two different customers some that are preemptive and some that are reactive and everybody's their own personality no judgment here but on the reactive side if you wait until it breaks you then run the risk of the car being craft your wife not being able to take the kids to school not being able to go to the hospital and then and then you can call us we have urgent spots open every day but sometimes we're booked up and now you have to wait whereas on the preemptive type of personalities and customers if they're more preemptive we can tune it up we can Lube it we can see when these things are about to break I'll ask you questions how long have you lived there what's your average rate of use we can do simple math and help tell you what your average lifespan of these parts are and we have a 29 point inspection sheet that we go through and we're going to check it all out thoroughly that to hopefully give you a clean bill of health which is what you want to hear but if there's a couple little minor don't have to hit them all let's hit some major ones so the major one for us is first of all you know the goal is overall condition but the most important thing is the safety of the door and the opener so when we say the inspection we're also if you have a motor unit we're gonna include that I call that a garage door opener so there's a safety check which prevents death and injury so that obviously is our number one concern liability for us more importantly don't want the customer to get hurt for their kids or the neighbors kids or their dogs and animals so that's gonna be the first thing there's what's called a force test we're gonna do a force test we're going to make sure the photo wise are correctly aligned at the correct height we're going to make sure that the wall switch works and things like that after that we're going to actually weigh your door I mean say why weigh my door we've gone to houses that the springs which this is a moving wall some doors weigh as little as 125 pounds but most doors weigh around 200 and then the heavy wood overlays can weigh 8 or 900 pounds we went to we went to a wood overlay that was mis-balanced by 150 pounds how did we find out the opener broke we get there and you know so we're doing our inspection and we weigh the door like the scales broken this can't be possible so and it ended up being off 150 pounds that's what broke their opener because somebody else previously did the job wrong from a different company so wow you could have caught that if they had us there beforehand well yeah because you're the garage door
